The "Secret Sauce"
“Leadership is all about creating a place where you can sit down and talk with someone.” —Robin Gilman
The following story is adapted from Industry Week and reads like this; “Good leaders often play the role of coach, pushing the people they lead in order to extend their skills and confidence. David Blanchard, Editor-in-Chief of Industry Week magazine, remembers Editor Dick Green, one of his own coaches, doing just that more than once. Blanchard especially recalls an occasion when, to the surprise of his group, Green gave an inexperienced intern a particularly difficult assignment. The more the group talked about it, the more it seemed to them that Green had made a poor decision. But, when Blanchard brought this up to Green, the veteran set him straight.
Green pointed out that no one’s potential is ever reached without the opportunity to make mistakes. The key point to remember about this approach is not that people might fail, but that, as Green says, “Sometimes people will surprise you.” Like other good coaching leaders, Green was willing to endure some predictable failures in hopes of receiving a welcome surprise.”
